Provide Your Golden Retriever with the Best Dry Skin Care
from:If you've noticed itching and scratching with your Golden Retriever, dry skin care may be necessary. Dogs, just like humans, have certain requirements for their personal hygiene and upkeep. Just as human skin types vary from person to person, so do dogs from breed to breed and dog to dog.
Some dogs are more prone to dry skin and skin allergies and irritations. Such is the case with the Golden Retriever. Dry skin care should be part of their regular grooming process. This wonderful breed of dog has a tendency to develop dry skin and dandruff. While there may be many different causes for this, the first thing you should consider is his diet. There are certain things that will bring on allergies in the Golden Retriever as well as other breeds of dogs. Corn is one of these items that may cause problems and give the Golden Retriever dry skin. Care should be taken to always feed your dog good quality dog food.
If you have your dog on a high-quality dog food and you still notice skin problems on your Golden Retriever, dry skin care may be necessary. A trip to the vet with your Golden Retriever will help to eliminate any health problems such as infections, parasites or allergies. You vet may suggest a food supplement for your Golden Retriever. Dry skin care often begins with the food you are feeding them.
Dog foods are made in different formulas for different stages of their lives. This is because their bodies require different nutrients as they age. The ingredients on the bag of dog food you buy should be the first thing you consider. Always make sure the first couple of ingredients are meat or meat products. Avoid dog foods that have corn or wheat in the ingredients, as these often are the culprit behind allergies, especially corn. In most cases, once your Golden Retriever is on a good diet of high-quality food, many of the allergies, dry skin or dandruff will disappear.
If your dog had a good checkup at the vet, is on a good quality dog food and there's still a problem with their skin, Golden Retriever dry skin care should be started on a daily basis. Make sure your dog is being brushed daily to get out any snarls or dirt that may be embedded in the hair. You vet can recommend a good dog shampoo and conditioner. Your Golden Retriever should not be bathed more than a couple times a year. Bathing them too frequently strips them of their natural oils, which are necessary to prevent dry skin.
You may want to try feeding your Golden Retriever a can of Salmon once a week. In addition to being a great treat for your dog, it works great for their coat.
